How to work out the value of old gold
- Find the hallmark. It is a small number stamped inside rings, on clasps or on the back of pendants, such as 585, 750 or 375. Some items show the karat instead, such as 14K or 18ct.
- Weigh each item in grams. A kitchen or letter scale is enough for an estimate. Stones, pearls and steel parts add weight but no gold, so subtract them if you can.
- Enter the hallmark and weight above. The result is the value of the pure gold the item contains at today's price.
What dealers pay for scrap gold
Dealers pay less than the value of the gold content, because the metal has to be tested and refined and the dealer keeps a margin. The difference varies a lot from one buyer to the next.
It pays to get two or three offers and compare each with the value shown here. Ask whether the offer is based on today's gold price and whether any fees are deducted for testing or refining.
Gold-plated and gold-filled items
Marks such as GP, GF, RGP, HGE, 1/20 or the word "plaqué" mean the item is plated or filled. It contains only a thin layer of gold and is worth far less than solid gold of the same weight. Unmarked items should be tested by a dealer before you rely on a value.
Gold coins and bars
Bullion coins and bars contain a fixed amount of fine gold, so their gold value does not depend on the weight you measure. You will find the most common coins and bar sizes in the table on each market page.
