What the price includes
The prices shown are reference values for the gold content, calculated from the international spot price per troy ounce and converted into CAD. They do not include dealer premiums, VAT or the making charges added to jewellery. When you sell, dealers usually pay somewhat less than this reference price.
Troy ounce, gram, kilogram
One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, and one kilogram is about 32.15 troy ounces. Gold is always priced in troy ounces, not in the ordinary ounce used for food.
Frequently asked questions
We take the international spot price for one troy ounce of gold, convert it into CAD at the current exchange rate and divide it by 31.1035 grams. For alloys we multiply by the gold content of the hallmark, for example 0.585 for 585 gold.
Dealers add a premium for production, storage and margin when they sell, and pay less than the spot value when they buy. Jewellery also includes making charges and VAT. The prices here show the value of the gold content alone.
Prices are updated several times a day from international market data. The time of the last update is shown above the price table.
